My mother really gave me a bag of dried oysters and I really left them in the fridge until they became furry. It was a pretty pathetic story, but eventually I realized I could tell it from the oyster’s point of view and have the oyster’s story refract the more predictable human one. To me, the emotional heart is the oyster’s desperate longing to believe that it still has the potential to change into something else at the end. Transformation is the theme I find most compelling in fairy tales. Regrettably, in our world, it never happens by magic.
