Fairy-Tale Files, published once weekly, feature three variations of a fairy tale chosen by one of Fairy Tale Review’s Assistant Editors.

In this 1860 story by Friedrich Gerstacker, a traveler stumbles upon a town that, due to a curse (what else?), only appears once every hundred years before sinking back into the earth.

Gene Kelly travels to Scotland and falls in love with Cyd Charisse, resident of Brigadoon, a town that just like Germelshausen appears exactly one day a century so that it will never change.

Not as romantic a notion as the Scottish highlands, but temporary towns (and some of the highest rents in North America) pop up as workers, attracted by recent oil booms, move in droves to North Dakota.
